Responsibilities
Reporting directly to the Pathologist, the Pathology Assistant is responsible for a wide range of technical and operational duties, including:
- Preparing, examining, and dissecting surgical specimens according to standard practices and established procedures
- Providing technical guidance, training, and advice to histopathology and pathology staff regarding specimen dissection
- Applying interpretation and discretion to prioritize specimen dissection based on urgency and fixation requirements
- Maintaining photographic documentation of specimens as required
- Ensuring specimen processing meets quality standards, service expectations, and turnaround-time requirements
- Observing safety procedures and ensuring regulatory and institutional compliance
- Participating in quality assurance and quality control activities
- Maintaining preventive maintenance records for laboratory equipment and instruments
- Following instructions from the Pathology Manager and Pathologists
- Providing functional guidance to colleagues and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships
- Reviewing and updating documentation, manuals, and standard operating procedures
- Performing additional duties and ad-hoc projects as assigned
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Medical Science, Master in Pathology, or Pathologist Assistant training/certification or equivalent
- More than 5 years of experience as a Pathology Assistant in a high-volume pathology laboratory
- Experience in histopathological laboratory techniques is an added advantage
